Retail has a broad range of managerial roles. An assistant manager, for example, oversees immediate employees, while a senior or department manager is responsible for a full team. Depending upon the size of the individual store or chain, a larger store could have several department managers and a senior management staff, and a chain may have a district or regional manager, who is responsible for several stores in one area. From this timekeeping screen, the employee can identify him/herself (relative to security clearance, if necessary), clock in and clock out, accept jobs listed in order of priority, review work order details, log onto and off of jobs, and all other functions associated with operation and time management.

In the modern facility, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software offers an integrated system working to coordinate all of the variables involved in inventory management (inventory tracking, cycle counting, purchase requisitions, demand planning, etc.) to facilitate automated inventory purchasing, and produce lean production results. For the modern manufacturer, this common sense approach to inventory and production coordination and control means tighter grips on cost margins through the elimination of inventory waste in the system.
