Career As A Pharmacist

By adam george at 2011-01-27 06:08:27
If you are thinking about starting a career in pharmacy, then you should look into what the benefits and advantages of this industry are. Pharmacist jobs are an attractive choice for many people who are interested in science and have the necessary school results to enter the university course required.

Those who are intending to study this degree will generally be required to have prerequisites of chemistry at school. However, being good at science is not the only requirement. This career will suit people who enjoy speaking with people from different backgrounds and ages. You also need to be able to empathize with people and present complex information in a manner that is easy to understand. Having good attention to detail is another characteristic that is important in order to be able to perform the job to a high level. You will often have to work under time pressure too, and be able to maintain focus while under pressure.

Drug interactions are a terrible danger to older patients who cannot see the writing on their medicine bottles or for people who are in excessive pain and have gathered prescriptions from different doctors. A pharmacist may not be able to spot this because the person may be getting the other medications elsewhere. However, if an elderly patient has come in with two medications that are dangerous when taken together, it is the responsibility of the pharmacist to put a stop to it and explain the problem.

Compounding Pharmacy: Compounding is the mixing of drugs by a pharmacist to fit the unique needs of a patient. Compounding is performed when a patient is unable to take a particular medication or dosage strength in the traditional manufactured manner. For instance, if a person is unable to swallow, a drug will be modified to be taken another way such as through injection. In research, compounding pharmacists develop and test pharmaceutical formulations for new drugs so that the active ingredients are effective, stable, and easy to take by the patient.

The job itself often entails needing to be able to stand on your feet for a considerable amount of time. In many cases, it's also necessary to have good customer service skills and to be able to work in a somewhat stressful environment, such as with busy hours or atmospheres that are often seen with that of hospitals. Above all, many locations will require that you have educational training and a license in order to gain employment within the pharmacy career.

Educational training can often vary on the school a person goes to as well as depending on where they reside. However, in most situations, it is now required for any would-be pharmacist to have a Pharm. D. In most areas, which is a doctorate degree in pharmacy. Studies often revolve around chemistry, anatomy, biology, physics, social sciences and humanities, although schools may vary on their curriculum that they offer, making it important to research ahead of time.

Pharmacists can also work as sales representatives for a pharmaceutical company. You can also find pharmacists working in government institutions. They are normally employed in the area of drug safety and education. They ensure that drugs submitted for approval for humans are safe. Compounding pharmacy is another area where pharmacists are employed. These pharmacies specialize in preparing drug for the unique needs of a particular patient. These drugs are not normally manufactured on a mass basis.

Pharmacists can also teach in Universities and Pharmacy Schools. There are also pharmacists that freelance. For instance, these pharmacists will travel to various locations and medical facilities to fill in for pharmacists who are on vacation or have to take a leave of absence for a personal or professional reason. It is a good choice for people who like to be self employed and love to travel.
